THE ARTIST STATEMENT
Examples:
Elisa Paloschi
I use photography as a means of self-expression – I make pictures for myself, to identify with hidden qualities of my character, to better understand my reality, and to express my interpretation of the world around me. A clearer understanding of myself and of my world allows me to explore fragments of life as an abstract form, and also to interact with people I would otherwise not be able to engage with. My goal is to use my camera like Alice’s rabbit hole, to open an unexplored world, a place of curious self-expression, but also a world of new relationships, new chances new beginnings and most importantly new stories.
Jonathan H. Dough
My artwork takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues. In my work, I deconstruct the American dream, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and lullabies that are part of our childhood and adult culture. My work reproduces familiar visual signs, arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces. Often time’s themes are combined that feature mundane domestic objects, juxtaposed with whimsical objects, and often embellished with stenciled text. The texts provide clues to content and interpretation. While I use a variety of materials and processes in each project. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the design of the work. Each project often consists of multiple works, often in a range of different media, grouped around specific themes and meaning.
Helpful Hints:
If you have trouble writing about yourself, write about an artist you admire. Then write about yourself from that point of view. Begin writing as if you were talking to someone about your art Have a friend ask you questions about your artwork. Take notes as you answer the questions Have someone who is not familiar with your artwork read your statement and ask you questions Create a statement that makes the reader want to look at and know more about your artwork Your statement should be more than just a description of your art and/or art process Read your statement aloud as you edit Have a classmate, the art teacher, another teacher, the janitor, etc. read your artist’s statement while looking at your artwork
