PHOTOSHOP ASSIGNMENT #1

Learning Goal for this Assignment
Create a collage of yourself.  A collage of who you are in the real world or the digital world, or both.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, a collage is:

Artistic technique of applying manufactured, printed, or “found” materials, such as bits of newspaper, fabric etc. to a panel or canvas, frequently in combination with painting.

By digital world, if you have an Avatar that defines you, or have some type of alternate personality online. You will contrast yourself with little items representing the other side of your life you don’t broadcast to the world – emotions, realities, challenges and hopes. The goal here is to examine the relationship between the different “selves” you present for different contexts – personal self, school self, family self, relationship self, work self, gaming/avatar self, social media self, etc. What are the contrasts, contradictions or correspondences?

Think about the following questions:
What defines the real you?
What is the truth of your life?
How does your digital self differ from your non-digital self, are they the same?
How are you going to make yourself using different media?
Open up Photoshop Elements.  Click File>New
Create a file that is 1400px by 1400px with a resolution of 300DPI.

Success Criteria
– Include some kind of selection use, manual or auto
– layers
– the collage communicates the digital or non-digital you
– file is the right size, with the correct resolution
– the collage includes a picture of you

2.     Choose ONE video in which to create a backwards designed storyboard.

3.     You will create the storyboards on blank white paper given to you to create your own boxes and label them according to what you’ve learned so far this week. (drawings, written text, directional arrows etc.)

Tuesday March 27th, 2018

1. Take notes in your sketchbook of the following Storyboarding Instructions.

The storyboard is
  • A “Visual Script” for your production, looking very much like a comic strip version of the story.
  • A production “Blueprint” for your crew to follow.
  • A detailed list of the assets you need to create: graphics, video, dialogue, sound effects, text etc.

The storyboard is intended for
  • The “studio” for approval before production is started
  • The production crew, to assemble the assets

Process

  • BRAINSTORM the original story idea or “Concept”
  • WRITE a script or outline for the story
  • STORYBOARD the script
  • REVISE

Purposes

  • To work out and discuss your ideas, and to fix bad stories before they get made
  • To visualize how your production will look, and get creative with shots and action
  • To describe how your production is sequenced, and act as a step by step guide to making and shooting your film
  • To plan where and what type of additional sound effects or dialogue will be included

Tips

  • Put your shots and scenes of your storyboard in an order that tells your story clearly.
  • Plan your story so that the visual images and the script can be clearly understood by reading your storyboard.
  • Plan your production in the most interesting and appealing way possible for the audience.
  • Plan not only what happens in each shot, but also how fast or how slow you want it to happen.
  • Eliminate unnecessary or repetitive shots and add missing shots. Cut long boring shots and break them down into shorter more interesting shots.
  • Ensure that there is a smooth, clear, logical flow from shot to shot and scene to scene.

2. Watch the following video and take notes in your sketchbook of important elements:

3. You will now work independently, in pairs, or in groups of three to begin creating your very own rough storyboards - in your sketchbooks.

*Who you choose to work with will be who you will be working with for your final summative. Choose wisely.
